Why Servant-Leadership?

At The Gabriel Center, we are convinced that the time for servant-leadership is now. Voices throughout time have called us to lead as servants, to care more about those who have been entrusted to us than about our own needs, to learn how to listen, really listen, to what others have to say and to uphold the gifts, skills and dignity of every person. Servant-leaders do all that.

But most importantly, servant-leaders dig down deep to the causal roots of conflict and ferret them out so that they can be examined and understood. It is for this reason that the time for servant-leadership in the world is now. Now with an urgency never known before, we must understand that we can only resolve the conflicts in which we are involved and which threaten the well-being of humankind not through weapons but by identifying the core issues inherent in the contention and facilitating an understanding at that deepest level. Simply put, we must learn how to get along with each other or we, along with all the inhabitants of the Earth, and the planet itself are at risk.

And servant-leadership provides a powerful counter-force to that ultimate terror. As we all together live out our lives as servant-leaders, we live out a life of love - by sharing power and control; by deeply listening to each other; by finding ways to speak the truth in love; by committing to our relationships and shepherding them through crises and conflicts - we work together to push back at that ultimate terror and discover a proclamation of abundance: We come to know that when we love one another, we live in fullness, health, joy and peace.
